A plug plant can be from cutting propagation or from seed, in place of propagating the plant in a seed tray and pricking it out or in the case of rooted cuttings moving them on, they are normally propagated directly in the plug cell where they stay until either planted out in the garden or potted for planting out later when they have become a little more mature.

The main advantage, apart from the time saved in propagation, is that plants grown as plug plants develop

much quicker producing flowers or in the case of vegetables is ready to harvest sooner.
