WASHINGTON (AFP) - A strong earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.3 struck the Aleutian Islands off Alaska, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries and no tsunami warning issued, the US Geological Survey and the National Weather Service said.
The earthquake struck at 7:18 local time (0418 GMT, Wednesday), at a depth of 15 kilometers (9.5 miles) in the ocean a few kilometers west of Kiska Island, in the Rat Islands group of the Aleutians, 274 kilometers east-southeast of Attu Station, the USGS said.
"An earthquake has occurred with a magnitude such that a tsunami is not expected," said the National Weather Service's West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.
