A researcher at the University of California, San Diego, has been selling home kits to detect bipolar genes since he developed the system last month.

Dr. John Kelso’s La Jolla Psynomics is estimated to be one of nearly 1,000 companies with home genetic testing kits that have entered the market in the past year. In the case of determining if you might be bipolar, it’s as simple as spitting in a cup, mailing the cup to the lab, and waiting– La Jolla mails the results to your doctor as a guard against self-diagnosis. This strikes me as a phenomenally bad idea– not the genetic testing, although the American Psychiatric Association has yet to make a judgement on the matter.
