Indexes are used to:

• increase the speed of data access
• enforce uniqueness of data

However, they have their disadvantages. Firstly, they consume a lot of disk and memory space. Each time you create an index it will store all index keys, ordered in ascending or descending order; the larger the key, the bigger the index. Secondly, they cause slower inserts and may cause slower updates and deletes, though not necessarily.
