More Oklahomans are receiving the assistance than ever before.
In February, 444,184 Oklahomans received food stamps, which is 2,000 more than in the previous month.
The previous high was set in December 2005, when 443,045 people received aid.
The increase is a 6.4 percent jump compared with February 2008, when 417,624 Oklahomans received food stamps.
The average benefit is $3 per person per day.
The federal stimulus package is expected to boost that to about $3.40 a day, DHS officials say.
The stimulus package will add a total of 13.6 percent to the food stamp program and will go into effect April 1.
"If that 13.6 percent is applied to the (current numbers), that would mean there will be $6.5 million coming into the economy of Oklahoma," Johnson said.
Tulsa County has a monthly average of about 57,143 residents receiving food stamps.
For a family of three
to participate in the program, the
monthly income cannot exceed
about $1,900.
