If that sounds a little unconventional, it's because Lopez was taking a males-only course offered at Northeast Lakeview College, the newest of five Alamo Community Colleges.


Mary Daly, a former professor at Boston College, barred men from some of her classes at the private, Jesuit-run institution. Administrators reprimanded Daley, claiming the exclusion violated Title IX. She was forced to retire in 1999 after two male students filed a discrimination complaint against the university, but the case was settled out of court.


“It's not segregation; it is a different instructional approach,” Reno said. “If it can benefit women and there is an interest, we will do the same thing for them.”
