Police investigate top SA cancer charity


THE operations of one of South Australia's largest cancer charities is the subject of a police investigation.


Major Fraud Investigation Section detectives have been examining the records of the Cancer and Bowel Research Association after being alerted to certain aspects of its financial operations.


They are facing a range of fraud and dishonesty charges in connection with more than $1 million in donations.


The CBRA - trustee for well-known charities including the Cancer and Bowel Research Trust, Breast Cancer Australia and the Kids Cancer Research Trust - receives more than $5 million annually in donations and bequests.


CBRA chairman Troy Manhire, 35, who is also the chief executive of the Cancer and Bowel Research Trust, has been questioned by detectives.


However, in the financial reports of the CBRT and CBRA, some details of his salary package and bonus payments are allegedly not disclosed.
