Fewer than half of Labour's grassroots activists want Brown as leader in the next election

One in five Labour grassroots activists want Gordon Brown to quit the party now, while fewer than half think he should be leader in the next election.

The poll of 800 party members carried out by YouGov for Channel 4 News found that one in three thought that they stood no chance of winning the election if Mr Brown remained leader.

More than half - 53 per cent - thought that they would be better off if Tony Blair was still in Number 10.
